Paddling

when I was born
my parents laid me
in a dark green canoe
gave me a paddle
taught me
to use it
to keep water out
to listen
sound of paddle lapping the calm surface
of mountain lake

thought my friends
coworkers and family needed help
so I would put them in my canoe
it filled with so much water
I almost sank myself

each of us
must paddle our own canoe
we
must go somewhere
go somewhere
because floating doesn't count
each morning
sun
fog, calm of lake
and beginning to paddle
